The most recognised and renowned ski area in Australia, Thredbo’s location and elevation makes it perfect for plenty of natural snow. Elevation means the snow starts earlier and stays longer but as in all resorts we are still at the mercy of the elements. Just to be sure Thredbo has just installed new automated snow making guns, the most technologically advanced in the country and capable of voluminous amounts of snow guaranteeing top to bottom runs in even the most marginal seasons.
The highlight of a days skiing at Thredbo is the Crackenback Supertrail, a 5.7km run from the highest lifted point in Australia to the base. It’s worth it for the view alone.
Friday Flat is a dedicated beginners area serviced by the ski school and a low speed quad chair, so you don’t flip out on your first ride. Thredboland is the ski school where you leave the children for one of the best learning environments comparable to anywhere in the world.
If you love to stop for refreshments on the way down, Black Sallees, Eagles Nest and the legendary Kareela Hut provide the sustenance to continue to the bottom. Of the advanced runs Funnel Web, Cannonball and Michael’s Mistake are the pick of the bunch. Intermediates have a great range of terrain to choose from in the Merritts area with highlights being Exhibition and The Falls. Merritts restaurant next to the Cruiser chairlift provides and excellent venue for lunch or relaxing in the sun with a schnapps or warm gluwein
